The Specialized Services Department is responsible for coordinating all services provided by Caswell Center to community agencies, groups and individuals in the 32 counties of the Eastern Region. The department is organized into three areas: Family Services, Foster Grand Parent Program, and Volunteer Services.

Family Services works closely with community interagency councils in assessing potential clients for regular admission.  Family Services also provides follow along services to individuals placed from the facility back into the community; refers individuals to appropriate alternative services; provides counseling services to families; coordinates the Parents and Friends Association; and petitions the courts for guardianships. Family Services facilitates technical assistance and consultation to communities and helps community programs develop resources. Specialists at the Center are available to plan and conduct workshops, seminars, conferences, and other training activities; assess service needs in communities and assist in their development; and coordinate student programs. Through Family Services a link is provided with colleges and universities to assist in determining and implementing methods to better meet the changing needs identified with the region.

Foster Grandparent Program is a comprehensive community service program in Lenoir and Greene County that enables seniors who are over 60 years of age an opportunity to share their experience and their talent to improve the lives of children and young adults in need. The program hosts 10 work sites including Caswell Center, whereby more than eighty Foster Grandparents help children and young adults develop the skills, confidence, and the strength to succeed in life. The program positively enhances the lives of the individuals served and allows the seniors to remain active while giving back to the community. Over 20 individuals at the Center are served by this program.

Volunteer Services coordinates the recruitment and placement of volunteers; facilitates the provision of multimedia public information; and coordinates the Sponsor-A-Resident program, companions. Volunteer Services also handles the receipt and distribution of donated monies, good and services, coordinates special activities and projects in the community and on campus, and operates the Center's Museum and Visitors Center.
