The role of Advocacy is to ensure that the care, treatment, planning, and service delivery to the Caswell Center individuals does not violate their human and legal rights. Advocacy's role is to safeguard and represent the people who live at Caswell Center. The advocates investigate complaints of violations of individuals rights and report the outcome of these investigations to the Human Rights Committee and the Center Director. Advocates act as consultants, educators and resource persons to both individuals, families, and staff. They provide input into policy and procedures to ensure that the rights of the individuals are respected. Advocates are ex-officio members of the Human Rights Committee. They attend Human Rights Committee meetings as well as Human Rights Committee Behaviour Program Review meetings. At the Human Rights committee meetings, they are not able to vote, but report to the committee on advocacy issues as well as policy and procedure changes.Advocacy is supervised by the newly created Advocacy and Customer Services Section of the NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Abuse Services.
